Traffic on the Malahat is stopped northbound due to a crash.

The Malahat Highway has reopened in both directions following an unusual crash that ended with a vehicle on top of another vehicle.

The crash occurred on a stretch of the highway near Finlayson Arm Road and Goldstream Park Friday afternoon, briefly shutting it down in both directions.

Photos sent to CHEK News show an SUV on top of another vehicle, with its nose angled downward. DriveBC webcams showed traffic at a standstill past Finlayson Arm Road.

DriveBC said at around 3:45 p.m. the Malahat Highway had reopened after tow trucks cleared the two vehicles from the crash scene. Traffic delays were still expected.

BC Emergency Health Services confirmed it was called to the crash just before 3 p.m. and one ambulance responded, but paramedics did not transport any patients to hospital.

No word yet on the cause of the crash, or how the SUV came to a stop on top of the other vehicle.
