Magnitude 8.2 earthquake strikes off the coast of southern Mexico

A major earthquake struck off Mexico’s southern coast on Thursday night.

The magnitude 8.2 quake was recorded 112 kilometers off the coast of Chiapas near the border with Guatemala.

It shook in Mexico City and other parts of the country.

Tsunami waves are NOT expected in British Columbia or on the US west coast.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued notices of tsunami waves possibly reaching more than 3 meters above the tide level along some coasts of Mexico.

Waves of as high as 0.7 meters have already been observed in Mexico.

Smaller tsunami waves of up to 1 meter above tide level are possible in Guatemala, Ecuador, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, American Samoa, Fiji, Samoa, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Kiribati, New Zealand and Antarctica.
