WATCH: Stelly’s Secondary student Hunter Lastiwka had a breakout year in 2017, and will look to improve his climbing skills in his senior year.

Joining the climbing academy at Stelly’s in Grade Nine, Hunter quickly gravitated towards speed climbing and focused his training on the sprint-style discipline.

In 2017,  Hunter had a rough go in the provincial championships, but since Stelly’s was hosting the national championships, Hunter got a second chance. And Hunter didn’t pass up the opportunity. Lastiwka found a new gear and catapulted himself all the way to the gold medal run. Hunter was ousted in the final by a small margin, but the second place finish gave Hunter the chance to join the national team for the summer as they headed to Russia to compete at the World Championships. With a ationaln second place finish and a trip to Moscow under his belt, Lastiwka is planning for an even bigger 2018.
