Lisa Helps returns from ‘extraordinary’ trip to Alberta oil sands

Victoria mayor Lisa Helps returned Saturday after a first-hand look at the oil sands.

The mayor says she learned a lot during her day in Alberta and she believes it will foster a better understanding going forward.

“Am I now a whole-hearted supporter of the oil sands? No. That wasn’t the point of going…. but what I did see there are hardworking, dedicated people who are working to continuously improve how fossil fuels extracted, use less energy in so doing,” said Helps.

The mayor adds she was treated with generosity and open-heartedness and is calling it an extraordinary visit.
