Japanese karate master in Victoria

WATCH: Former karate world champion Takashi Katada is in Victoria this weekend at Kenzen Sports Karate, as part of a grand plan for Karate in Canada.

Katada wants to “build a bridge” between Japan and Canada, sending students and athletes back and forth to learn about the culture and karate overseas.

Katada won the world championship in 2002, and has since retired from competition.

But over the last decade, Katada has been training the best athletes in the sport in his home land, and is looking to grow the sport here in Canada. No Canadian has ever won a World Championship in karate.
