Students and staff at a Nanaimo elementary school are being warned of possible exposure to the novel coronavirus.

Island Health has added Mountain View Elementary to its COVID-19 exposure list after School District 68 confirmed the exposure event late Tuesday.

The potential exposure date is Feb. 16.

Students who have not been contacted by public health did not have a “high-risk” exposure and should continue attending school, according to the health authority.

Mountain View Elementary joins a list of 10 other facilities that are currently on Island Health’s Exposure in Schools list.

The health authority has reported a recent surge in COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island, with the active number climbing to 232 cases.

According to Island Health’s dashboard, there are 40 active cases on South Vancouver Island, 140 on Central, and 52 on North Vancouver Island.

An exposure event is defined by Island Health as “the presence of lab-confirmed COVID-19 case(s) in the school” during the period when a person is infectious.

Mountain View Elementary located on East Wellington Road in central Nanaimo.
