The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) has confirmed it is investigating a woman’s allegation of being sexually assaulted at CFB Esquimalt.

CFNIS spokesperson Maj. Jean-Marc Mercier said the alleged incident happened in October.

Mercier said no other details can be released at this time as the investigation is ongoing.

Mercier did not say when the complaint was received or who investigators have spoken to.

The CFNIS is an independent military police unit established in 1997 to investigate serious and sensitive matters related to Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces.

The Canadian Forces website says the CFNIS “performs a function similar to that of a Major Crime unit of the RCMP or large municipal police agency.”
