India reported 97,570 new cases of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the south Asian nation to 4.6 million.

The world’s second-most populous nation recorded nearly 100,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day.

According to data available on the World Health Organization’s website, India reported 97,570 new cases of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the south Asian nation to 4.6 million.

It’s most ever reported by one country in a single day, a record that India has set for the third straight day, having reported 95,735 new cases on Sept. 10 and 96,551 new cases on Sept. 11. No country has ever reported 100,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a single-day.

India has seen a staggering increase in new cases in recent weeks. A month ago, on Aug. 12, India had reported 2.3 million total cases of the deadly virus but by Sept. 6 it had surpassed 4.11 million.

Meanwhile, in the past 24 hours, there were 287,968 new cases of COVID-19 reported worldwide, with India representing 33 per cent of all new cases globally. The number of cases worldwide stands at 28,329,790.

Brazil reported the second-highest number of new cases globally at 40,557, followed by the United States at 37,128 new cases, Argentina at 11,905 new cases,  France at 9,260 new cases, Colombia at 7,813 new cases, and Peru at 7,291 new cases, according to WHO.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the organization’s director-general, told reporters during a media briefing earlier this week that around 180 vaccines are currently in development, including 35 that are in human trials phases.

“No disease in history has seen such rapid development in research. It is a testament to the incredible advances in science and technology the world has made in recent years,” he said.
