The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) says it is investigating after being notified of a police-involved incident in Port Hardy last week.

In a release Tuesday morning, the IIO said RCMP reported officers attended a home for an intoxicated male causing a disturbance on Jan. 15.

The male was arrested for breach of the peace and taken to cells at the RCMP detachment.

Police told the IIO the male complained of an injury and was offered to be taken to the hospital by officers when he was released.

After initially asking to be taken home, the IIO says the male later went to the hospital where it was confirmed he had an injury.

Port Hardy RCMP notified the IIO and B.C.’s police watchdog is now looking into what appears to be serious harm to the male during an interaction with officers.

The IIO would like to speak with anyone has any information regarding the incident.

You can call its witness line at 1-855-446-8477.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
