The Independent Investigations Office of BC says it is investigating after a woman suffered a serious injury when RCMP officers were attempting to apprehend her at Port Place Shopping Centre in Nanaimo.

Around 6 p.m. on March 29, police attempted to apprehend the woman and return her to a residential facility.

IIO says it is reported there was “an interaction” as the woman was taken into custody, and she was transported to the hospital.

The RCMP later learned she suffered a serious injury and notified IIO.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the injuries.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
