The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is currently investigating an incident involving the Victoria Police after an arrested man died in hospital.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is currently investigating an incident involving the Victoria Police after an arrested man died in hospital.

According to a press release issued on Monday, the incident in question occurred on Nov. 20 at approximately 1:45 a.m.

During the incident, Victoria Police officers were responding to a man allegedly causing a disturbance in the 600-block of Douglas Street, says the IIO.

The incident resulted in patrol officers arresting the man, who was said to have been medically cleared by Emergency Health Services, and placed in Victoria Police detachment cells.

A few hours later, Victoria Police say that the man appeared to be in medical distress.

IIO reports that at around 4:15 a.m. on Nov. 20 Emergency Health Services were called and the man was transported to a local area hospital.

Two days later, on November 22, Victoria Police were made aware that the man had died in hospital.

IIO was notified as a result of the man’s death as well.

As part of the investigation, the IIO says it wants to talk to any any person who saw, heard or recorded the incident.
