IIO called in to investigate after man injured during arrest in Nanaimo

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been called in to investigate the arrest of a man in Nanaimo.

According to RCMP, just before 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 3, police were called to the 1400 block of Bowen Road for a report of a disruptive man on a B.C. Transit bus. The bus was travelling on route 30, heading to Woodgrove Mall. The man was allegedly threatening passengers and inappropriately touching woman on the bus.

A Nanaimo RCMP officer went to the area and discovered the man had left the bus. Police said the suspect was found nearby and the officer attempted to arrest him. The man allegedly resisted arrest and he ended up on the ground, police said.

According to police, the man was injured during the arrest and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital with possible life threatening injuries. He was transferred to a larger hospital in stable condition. The RCMP officer and other members of the public were not injured during the incident.

Police said the scene and any evidence have been secured. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) have been notified and are going to the scene. The IIO will be looking into whether there is a connection to the police’s actions and the man’s injuries.

Nanaimo RCMP are still investigating the alleged threats and sexual assaults. Any witnesses who were on bus number 1073 are asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
