With British Columbians deciding what electoral system they prefer in future elections, the merits of electoral reform will be debated next week.
John Horgan and Andrew Wilkinson will go head-to-head in a televised 30-minute debate Nov. 8, to be broadcast on CBC British Columbia and Global B.C. from 7 to 7:30 p.m.
The voting period has started for eligible voters to answer a question of which system they prefer, either changing to proportional representation or sticking with the current first-past-the-post system.
Horgan is in favour of proportional representation and on its website, the NDP says the system is “used by democracies around the world, provides more choice for voters, more accountability and more collaborations between parties.”
On the flip said, Wilkinson said in a statement that the referendum is “a stacked deck in a rigged game,” and he accuses the New Democrats of manipulating basic constitutional rights to change B.C.’s voting system.
Proportional representation focuses on cooperation and puts people at the centre of our politics. Tune in Nov 8 at 7pm on CBC & Global networks to watch me debate #prorep with @wilkinson4bc. #pr4bc #bcpoli

This referendum has been flawed from the start & is just not good enough for BC. @jjhorgan must explain why he’s trying to change our democracy to hold on to power. On Nov 8, I will be doing everything I can to make sure he does that. #PropRep https://t.co/lickOyJzMq

CBC morning show host Stephen Quinn and CKNW talk show host Lynda Steele will moderate the debate.
