Campers seen packing up on Friday in Saanich.

Homeless campers on a West Saanich Road property left Saturday at 4 p.m., just one day after their agreed departure with the property owner.

Camp leader Chrissy Brent says they were heading to another area in Saanich or Langford, and that property owner Sam Seera convinced them to take a different course of action.

“Through the cooperation and conversation with Mr. Sierra, we have changed our mind from a more controversial location to a place that will far less impact neighbourhoods,” said Brett.

Campers ended up behind the Saanich fire and police department buildings, along the Patricia Bay Highway.

Campers are hoping that their ongoing effort will see the government come to the table and speak to them.

“Canada and the province have been really passionate in sweeping homeless people under the carpet… they are allowing citizens to live like in fourth world countries,” added Brett.

The tenters arrived at the property on Oct. 2 after they maxed out the days allowed at Goldstream Park. Saanich mayoral candidate David Shabib, the father of one Seera’s tenants, invited the campers to stay at the property without first getting approval from Seera.

The group had also been previously evicted from the two former tent cities in Saanich.
