‘Heartbroken’: Police seize vehicle in Cedar as part of fatal hit-and-run investigation

Nanaimo RCMP have seized a vehicle suspected to have been involved in the fatal hit-and-run crash in Cedar this past weekend.

The vehicle was towed away from a Cedar home Wednesday night and now police are trying to determine, if indeed it’s the vehicle that was involved and if so who was behind the wheel.

Neighbours say they saw police converge on the property, paying a lot of attention to an SUV in the driveway.

“They towed the vehicle out last night at 8:30 [p.m.] and me and my mom were just blown away by all the action next door. It’s not common to have a situation like this in this part of town,” said Alan Buchanan, a neighbour.

Neighbours say police remained in front of the property overnight.

Acting on a search warrant, police combed through a Cedar property on Gould Road East Thursday.

On Saturday night just before nine o’clock there was a fatal hit and run on Cedar Road which claimed of the life of A 90-year-old woman. A passing motorist saw the unconscious woman on the side of the road and called 911. Despite attempts to revive her, a paramedic determined she had died at the scene.

Police have since been searching for the vehicle involved. Earlier this week, they combed nearby roads and ditches looking for any potential evidence that could help them track down that vehicle.

Nanaimo RCMP declined to comment on the investigation Thursday.

The crash site is slightly more than a four kilometer drive from where the SUV was seized Wednesday.

A neighbour says it’s hard to believe this is happening next door

“They’re good friends of mine. I do not know what is going on over there but it’s very suspicious. They’re very good people,” said Buchanan.

A tipster who informed CHEK News about the vehicle impoundment and police presence at this home, who wants to remain anonymous, says there was damage to the front right bumper area.

The whole situation very troubling for a normally quiet neighbourhood.

“Me and my mom were very surprised with what’s been going on and we’re heartbroken about the situation as well,” said Buchanan.

A member of the victim’s extremely shaken family says they’re still not ready to comment publicly.
