Hazmat crews quickly cleaned up a dangerous goods package spill at the Victoria International Airport on Wednesday.

According to Victoria Airport Authority (VAA) spokesperson Ken Gallant, just before 11 a.m., a box containing dangerous goods was being transferred from a Cessna Caravan into a cargo van when a leak was noticed. The plane was a contracted cargo flight.

The aircraft operator notified the airport fire service. They responded along with BC Ambulance and the North Saanich Fire Department. The cargo owner had a hazmat team that cleaned up the spill.

“It was contained to the aircraft,” Gallant said.

No one was injured and there was no impact to regularly scheduled operations as the leak happened on a separate ramp. The spill was cleared within an hour. The VAA did not confirm the substance that had leaked.
