Police have confirmed that seven children died in an early-morning fire Tuesday that witnesses said quickly engulfed a home in a Halifax suburb.

Investigators say the young children are all from the same family.

A man and woman remain in hospital.

A neighbour said the family that lived in the house included seven children ranging in age from three months to 17-years-old.

The Ummah Mosque and Community Centre says the family was Syrian, and that the children will be buried either later today or tomorrow.

Neighbours say the father was badly burned and was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries while the mother is expected to survive her injuries.

Next-door neighbour Danielle Burt says she awoke to a loud bang and a woman screaming just after midnight.

The newly-built home was extensively damaged and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
