Green Party in British Columbia is set to announce its new leader on Monday after a three-way race to replace former leader Andrew Weaver.

The Green Party in British Columbia is set to announce its new leader on Monday.

Three candidates are vying for the top job after nine days of online and phone voting. The announcement is expected to be made around 12 p.m. PT.

Member of the legislature Sonia Furstenau is up against environmental lawyer Cam Brewer and entrepreneur Kim Darwin.

Furstenau is the lone candidate of the three nominees who is located on Vancouver Island. She is currently the MLA for Cowichan Valley, after being elected back in 2017.

She is House Leader for the BC Green Party, and currently sits on six parliamentary committees, including the Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth, and the Legislative Assembly Management Committee.

Earlier this year, former leader of the Green Party of Canada, Elizabeth May, threw her support behind Furstenau to become the next leader.

The new leader would replace Andrew Weaver, who stepped aside in January to sit as an Independent in the legislature.

The Green party won three seats in the 2017 election and signed a power-sharing agreement giving the NDP a chance to form a minority government.

That deal meant the Greens have been a factor in legislation and policy to ban large political donations while having a say on environmental and economic initiatives.
