BC Green Leader Sonia Furstenau wins her B.C. seat in Cowichan Valley riding

Green party leader Sonia Furstenau has been re-elected in her Cowichan Valley riding in the B.C. election.

She been re-elected as MLA in Cowichan Valley, keeping the seat for the party.

Furstenau won 4,223 out of 9,263 counted votes (45.59 per cent) with 73 of 101 polls reporting.

Rob Douglas of the NDP won 3,480 votes (37.57 per cent). Tanya Kaul of the BC Liberal Party won 1,560 votes (16.84 per cent).

As of 9:50 p.m., The Canadian Press is projecting the BC NDP has won a majority government. The party has won or is leading in 55 of 87 seats. The BC Liberal Party has won or is leading in 29, and the BC Green Party has won or is leading in three seats.

As of Oct. 23, 10,702 vote-by-mail packages had been issued to registered voters in the riding. There are a total of 44,071 registered voters in Cowichan Valley.

Provincewide, 724,279 mail-in ballots have been sent out, and there are 3,485,858 registered voters.

Mail-in ballots will be counted by hand, starting in 13 days.

1. Sonia Furstenau (incumbent) – Green party

Votes: 4,223 votes (45.59 per cent)

2. Rob Douglas – NDP

Votes: 3,480 votes (37.57 per cent)

3. Tanya Kaul – BC Liberal Party

Votes: 1,560 votes (16.84 per cent)
