School playgrounds in the Greater Victoria area are off-limits, at least for now.

The Greater Victoria School District announced Saturday that all playgrounds located on school grounds will be closed.

The closure  is effective immediately and is intended to help “stop the spread” of COVID-19.  Signs will be installed to inform the public of the playground’s closure.

“We are closing our school playgrounds in the best interests of our kids and community,” Shelley Green, school district superintendent, said in a press release.

“We all have a social responsibility in preventing the surge of transmission. We must do our part to flatten the curve and comply with the recommendations from our public health authorities.”

School playfields will remain open. However, the public is being asked by the school board to practice social distancing when visiting playfields.

There are 27 elementary schools, 10 middle schools and seven secondary schools located within the Greater Victoria School District.
