Goodbye, Vee! Legendary broadcaster says farewell to CHEK after 37 years

CHEK

Her name is Veronica, but everyone knows her as Vee.

And after a 37-year career at CHEK News, Vee Cooper is saying goodbye.

In her long and storied career (entirely with CHEK), Vee has worked as a news editor, archivist, researcher, weather host, CHEK Around co-host, education and health reporter, Island 30 reporter and is currently the producer of weekly features Vital People — spotlighting those who make a difference in our community — and This Week in History — a peek inside the Royal BC Museum.

When she first joined CHEK in 1984, Vee started as an ENG camera assistant, operating a portable video tape recorder.

“It’s been a remarkable career. I’m so grateful to all our viewers who’ve helped us grow and thrive as an independent station. How lucky am I to live and work in such an exciting industry in this spectacular corner of the world!” says Vee.

Her friendly face will be sorely missed around the CHEK Newsroom, says news director Scott Fee.

“Her spirit, work ethic and class on and off the air, will be forever part of CHEK’s legacy,” he says. “I think it’s fair to say, Vee is CHEK.”

Station manager Rob Germain has known Vee since the beginning, and says she was a key part of CHEK becoming employee-owned more than a decade ago.

“Even when things looked the most dire for CHEK in 2009, Vee believed we could make it if we all just rolled up our sleeves, which she did, and continues to do,” says Germain.

“Vee’s legacy will be the impact she has had in our community, recognizing the good work of others.”

Please join us in wishing Vee the best in her new adventures. We’ll miss her!
