A GoFundMe campaign set up for the family of an eight-year-old Nanaimo boy who was fatally struck by a truck while cycling has surpassed its goal by thousands of dollars.

Nanaimo RCMP said the boy, who was wearing a bike helmet, was struck on Jan. 6, 2019 when he rode of a driveway on Nelson Street and collided with a Ford F-350 pickup truck. He was with his sibling at the time.

Police said the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. They did not release his name but a GoFundMe campaign set up on Monday for the family’s funeral costs identified the victim as Linden Baglo.

“Linden was a charismatic sweet boy who loved to tell stories and gave the best arm massages to all that would listen and let him! I had once said he would be an actor one day with all the different characters and voices he could dream up and act out,” family friend Tracy Williams wrote on the page.

By Tuesday afternoon, the page had raised more than $28,000, surpassing the original goal of $10,000. The goal had been updated to $20,000 by Monday evening and is now at $30,000.

Williams wrote in an update on Monday night that Baglo’s family was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and wants to thank everyone for their support.

“At this time they need time to grieve and of course, make the heartbreaking preparations to come. Thanks again for all the support and shares to help this family at such a terrible time,” Williams wrote.
