Temperatures are set to soar this weekend on Vancouver Island, with Port Alberni expected to reach the mid-30s.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement for inland Vancouver Island and east Vancouver Island, including Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo, and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.

According to the weather agency, daytime temperatures are expected to hit the high twenties and low thirties along the coast and reach into the mid-thirties inland. Port Alberni is expected to reach 33 C on Saturday and 34 C on Sunday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada and medical health officers across the province are reminding residents to protect themselves from the heat by:

  1. Staying hydrated by drinking cold beverages (preferably water) irrespective of your activity intake. Don’t wait until you are thirsty.
  2. Spending time in an air-conditioned facility (shopping centres, library, community centre or restaurant) for several hours every day.
  3. Dressing for the weather by wearing loose, light-weight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  4. Staying in the shade or use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more to avoid sunburn.
  5. Never leaving pets or children alone in a parked car.
  6. Check regularly on older people, people who are not able to leave their homes and anyone who may not be spending at least several hours every day in air-conditioned places for signs of heat-related illness. Anyone who needs information on heat-related illness can call HealthLink BC at 811.
  7. Monitor local news and weather channels.

Other areas of southern B.C., including Metro Vancouver and the Okanagan Valley, are also under the weather statement.
