A “gas main incident” temporarily shut down Tillicum Road between Craigflower Road and Gorge Road West on Friday morning.

Township spokesperson Tara Zajac said a private construction crew in the area damaged a line around 11 a.m. while working.

Fire crews and FortisBC were sent to the scene, and the road was shut down for approximately an hour. At 12:30 p.m., the township said traffic had reopened in both directions, though one lane was still being blocked for work.

FortisBC spokesperson Nicole Brown says no buildings were evacuated because of the gas leak, though one four-storey condo building remained cut off from natural gas early Friday afternoon.

Crews have the gas under control but were still making repairs as of 1 p.m., according to Brown. Though the damage wasn’t extremely severe, its location in a busy area makes repairs more difficult, she said.

FortisBC is reminding everyone to “call before you dig” and to make sure you are following safe digging practices to avoid accidentally damaging gas lines.

“We ask folks to be patient,” said Zajac. “It’s Friday and it’s a busy chunk of road there on Tillicum between Gorge and Craigflower, so we ask that people please be patient.”
