FortisBC crews work on repairing a gas line that was struck on Government Street on Feb. 28, 2019.

Fortis BC says crews have fixed a natural gas line that was damaged this morning in James Bay.

A Fortis spokesperson said the gas leak was brought under control at 11:50 a.m. and repairs were finished by 12:15 p.m. The gas line fed a commercial building.

Victoria firefighters rushed to the scene at 68 Government Street, on the corner of Government and Niagara streets, at 10:50 a.m. after an excavator hit a line at the site of a new home construction just before 11 a.m. and four buildings were placed under evacuation. Battalion Chief Doug Carey said there were three homes affected but only two people were home and had to leave.

There were road closures in the area.

The fire department said the scene has been turned over to FortisBC and all firefighters have left the scene.

Officials could not determine when repairs will be complete.

Fortis BC is reminding residents the majority of damages to natural gas lines are preventable and ask that you call or click before you dig to determine they are located.
