A section of downtown Victoria was closed to traffic on Thursday afternoon following a gas leak.

FortisBC says it was called to the intersection of Fisgard Street and Douglas Street to repair a damaged gas main valve around 1 p.m.

A section of Fisgard Street between Blanshard and Douglas streets was closed for the repairs. In a statement around 3:45 p.m. Thursday, FortisBC said it estimated repairs would be complete “later this evening.”

Gas was shut down to approximately 50 FortisBC customers due to the gas leak.

The company says it will begin relighting services for the affected customers once the repairs are complete.

“Public and employee safety is the number one priority for FortisBC,” said the company in a statement Thursday afternoon.

“We would like to remind everyone that if you smell rotten eggs or hear the sound of escaping gas, stop what you’re doing, go outside and dial 911 or call FortisBC’s 24-hour emergency line.”
