Victoria council voted on Thursday to lower Sunday rates in the downtown core once free parking is eliminated at the end of the month.

The plan will see Sunday parking fees set at $2 an hour ($1 an hour in outlying metered areas)  instead of $3 an hour charged on weekdays, and there will be a 4-hour time limit instead of the usual 90-minutes.

City parkades will still be free on Sundays.

The revenue generated once Sunday fees come into effect on May 1st will be used to fund bus passes for youth who live in the Victoria.

The report says lowering Sunday parking fees will mean an estimated $100,000 drop in anticipated revenue (from $600,000 to $500,000), but  says it should mean longer stays for shoppers and visitors to the downtown core.

“The combination of longer duration with reduced overall Sunday parking demand will likely still ensure adequate turnover and parking availability.” the report reads
