FortisBC crews are responding to damage to a service line on Forward Drive in Belmont Park.

Diana Sorace, corporate communications advisor with FortisBC, said a third party was working in the area and damaged a service line.

“There was a third party in the area working there and they hit a service line,” Sorace said. “There isn’t really any large impact. Crews are currently working on fixing the line and then two customers that have their service interrupted will be back online following that.”

Sorace said that is expected to happen before 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

She mentioned this serves as a timely reminder that April is Safe Digging Month.

“The majority of damages on our gas system are preventable,” she said. “If someone contacts BC One Call prior to digging, or doing any type of ground disturbance work, it is important to do that first so they know where buried natural gas lines and other utilities lie under underneath the ground. It is a preventable instance if they do call BC One Call prior to digging.”

Sorace says around 90 per cent of the damage that FortisBC lines sustain is preventable if people call BC One Call before doing any ground work.

In the instance in Belmont Park, Sorace says it is too soon to tell if this was a preventable instance, as an investigation will need to be done to determine if crews called BC One Call before doing their work.
