Even though the Enbridge pipeline that exploded last month is back in service, Fortis BC says it looking at the open market to replenish its stock to help keep customers warm during the winter.

Fortis BC corporate communications manager Sean Beardow says flow through the damaged pipeline near Prince George has reached 55 per cent, which is well below what is needed to get customers through the winter, especially if it’s cold.

Beardow says the company is getting more fuel from an Alberta pipeline and has received permission from the B.C. Utilities Commission to purchase natural gas on the open market.

Enbridge said Oct. 31 repairs were completed after the unexplained explosion to the 36-inch line Oct. 9, and flows of natural gas would be increased to reach 80 per cent of normal operating pressure.

But Fortis said 80 pent is still not enough since it uses 100 per cent of the Enbridge system to provide gas to its customers.

The natural gas company continues to ask customers to conserve natural gas use.
