WATCH: Over the past two days, Simon Keith had heart and kidney transplants, with organs from the same donor and they were reported to be a success.

On Tuesday, Keith was awake and alert and had his ventilator removed. His family is by his side in hospital in San Diego and although it’s very early, the outcome looks positive for the former Victoria resident.

Simon Keith, now 53, was a soccer star out of Mount Douglas Secondary.  He had heart issues in 1984 during his University of Victoria Vikes career by a heart condition known as myocarditis. He was on a path to play soccer professionally and internationally for the national team. After his transplant in 1984, he did go on to play pro soccer.
