Twenty firefighters from the Courtenay Fire Department responded. People from around the Comox Valley reported seeing thick black smoke in the area as flames shot up 30 feet (nine metres) into the air.

“We got called out for a structure fire,” said Courtenay Fire Chief Don Bardonnex. “We could see the smoke as soon as we pulled out of the station. On arrival, the trailer was fully involved.”

The fire was under control within 15 to 20 minutes but crews were on scene until 5 p.m. There was one occupant in the mobile home but he was able to leave without any injuries.

There are reports that the fire may have started in the garage but the cause is under investigation.

Four people who lived in the mobile home are displaced. A fifth person who lived in the mobile home next door is also without a home as it was heavily damaged. Two pets in the original home are unaccounted for. Emergency social services is working to get them all in temporary accommodation.
