First Nations Chief Robert Chamberlin was selected as the NDP’s candidate for the 2019 byelection for Nanaimo – Ladysmith Saturday.

The spot opened up after now B.C. MLA Sheila Malcolmson was elected in the January 2019 provincial byelection in Nanaimo and left her federal position.

The race is set for May 6

Chamberlin will be up against former Nanaimo Port Authority chair Michelle Corfield for the Liberals, businessman John Hirst for the Conservatives, Paul Manly for the Greens and Jennifer Clarke for the People’s Party.

“I hope to earn the trust of the people of Nanaimo – Ladysmith so I can work hard for them and make sure they get what they need from their government”, said Chamberlin in a release.

He was the former Vice-President of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs. He is a member of the Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis First Nation.

“I am honoured to have the opportunity to represent the NDP and to fight alongside Jagmeet for people who keep getting squeezed.”
