Firefighters extinguish blaze in Nanoose Bay, horses saved

Three horses in Nanoose Bay were saved after a building near the barn they were in caught fire.

Firefighters with the Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department were called to a fire at a property behind the Chevron gas station located on Island Highway East in Nanoose Bay at around 4:05 a.m. on Saturday.

When firefighters arrived on scene and discovered a fully engulfed structure fire business that was undergoing renovations at the time.

According to the Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department, the main concern was an adjacent horse barn that was about 10 feet away on another property.

Three horses were inside the barn, but fortunately, the owner was able to get them to safety.

In total, 20 firefighters, including 10 from Parksville’s fire department and two tanker trucks from Errington, ended up battling the blaze and managed to stop the blaze from spreading to the nearby horse barn.

Crews, according to the NBVFD, were on scene for six hours.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
