One person was taken to hospital and five boats were destroyed in an early morning fire at a boat storage facility in Ladysmith.

The fire sparked at approximately 4 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, with crews arriving on scene a short while later.

Fire trucks from Ladysmith Fire & Rescue, North Oyster Fire and North Cowichan Fire responded to the call, bringing upwards of 30 firefighters in order to extinguish the blaze.

One person who was at the boat storage facility sustained burn injuries and were taken to hospital as a result. At this time, the burns are believed to be non-life-threatening.

In total, five boats were completely destroyed by the fire with a couple others sustaining exterior damage.

Firefighting crews remained on the scene until after 11 a.m. on Saturday morning in order to put out hotspots.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, however, authorities believe it was accidental and is not being considered suspicious.
