Smoke rises from the motel as fire crews are on scene.

The Parksville Fire Department was called out to the Sea Edge Motel just before 4:00 p.m., Friday.

No one was injured, but 14 guests staying at the motel have had to be relocated.

When crews arrived, they discovered one of the units undergoing renovations was the source of the fire and worked quickly to extinguish the blaze.

Despite the unit experiencing only minor damage, several adjacent units were heavily affected by the thick smoke.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but investigators believe it was started from construction equipment,” said Parksville Fire Chief Marc Norris.

The plume of smoke coming off the motel could be seen from afar.

“There was a plume of smoke that was probably 60 ft high, we saw it from halfway downtown,” said Roy McKay, a resident of Parksville who spoke with CHEK.
