WATCH: Two Metchosin residents say they found dozens of financial documents containing personal information dumped in a wooded area off Sooke Road. Calvin To reports.

A Metchosin property owner and tenants recently came across dozens of financial documents containing personal information dumped in a wooded area off Sooke Road.

The documents were found among piles of garbage left just off a trail.

The property owner, who didn’t want his name used, said he contacted several people named in the documents in an attempt to return them to their rightful owners.

Dani Metzmeier is one of those clients whose information was found in the documents.

She says the financial advisor in question is Daryl Makarenko, who she said left the business years ago.

Documents found include emails sent from Metzmeier to Makarenko and other personal information going back to 2007.

“It was surprising that he would not take care of those papers of the people that he took care of their money,” Metzmeier says. “That information should be under lock and key and if you’re no longer going to be doing that job, you shouldn’t be able to have that information at your fingertips.”

CHEK News asked the British Columbia Securities Commission if it had been made aware of this case.

A representative would not confirm if an investigation was underway, instead of saying in a statement:

“We expect registrants to exercise care and caution when handling client information,” the British Columbia Securities Commission said in a statement.

“Firms are required to keep records they are required to keep under securities legislation including client information, for 7 years in a safe location, in durable and accessible form. While there is no mandated method for disposing of client information, firms are required to manage the risks associated with their business in accordance with prudent business practices. This includes ensuring that no one has unauthorized access to information, particularly confidential client information.”

A search on the Canadian Securities Administrator?s National Registration Search did not show a listing for Daryl Makarenko.
