WATCH: One man is dead after a crash that closed part of Highway 19 north of Courtenay Thursday morning. Police say conditions were icy and that speed may have been involved. As Dean Stoltz reports, firefighters say people still aren’t getting the message and that drivers were actually passing them as they were driving to scene with lights and sirens on.
The male driver of a pick-up truck has died after his vehicle lost control on Highway 19 and rolled into the ditch near Black Creek early Thursday morning.
Oyster Bay fire personnel were on the scene and said the incident happened just after 4 a.m. just north of Hamm Road.
The deceased man is reported to be in his early 30s and authorities say icy road conditions are likely a factor in the crash.
A coroner and a member of the ministry of environment was on scene as a Tidy Tank fuel storage unit came loose on the back of the truck which prompted an environmental response.
A fire official told CHEK responders were upset with other local traffic passing their vehicles while under flashing lights on the slippery conditions.
One emergency response vehicle was nearly rear-ended while attempting a U-turn.
Highway 19 for southbound traffic was closed over a near 17 kilometre stretch from Hamm Road to the Jubilee Parkway south of Campbell River.
Drive BC says the highway has reopened.
