Family members identify man killed in fatal motorcycle crash near Port Renfrew

Family members have identified the 58-year-old Saanich man who died after a motorcycle collision near Port Renfrew on Oct. 6.

Family confirmed Tuesday that the man was Fred Fernando.

Police said the crash occurred on West Coast Road (Highway 14) near the Parkinson Creek trailhead. According to police, the initial investigation suggests that sometime between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., the 58-year-old Saanich man, was travelling eastbound on West Coast Road, lost control and went over an embankment. Officers and paramedics were called to the area at around 9 p.m.

According to Fernando’s family and friends, Fernando was out for a group ride with his club from Patriarchs Motorcycles in Victoria. The group had gone out for lunch and were on their way back.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash. Fernando’s family said when the club members realized Fernando wasn’t with them anymore, they doubled back and saw his flashers in the dark on the side of the road. The group then called for help, guiding paramedics and search and rescue crews to the scene.

Rod “DJ Daddy” Mack, a club DJ and a friend of Fernando, said Fernando was also a DJ who helped build Victoria’s mobile DJ community. Mack put together a video to honour Fernando.

“We are all going to miss him very much all my heart and blessings go out to his remaining family and wife,” Mack said. Mack also added that since Fernando was Filipino, he was often the exclusive DJ at the community’s events.
