A tree which fell just before 1 p.m. on hydro lines Tuesday sparked a small brush fire and has left 1,500 hydro customers without power in East Sooke.

Sooke Fire Rescue and the East Sooke Volunteer Fire Department have extinguished the fire and are cleaning up the scene. B.C. Hydro crews have arrived but there is no estimate for when power will be restored.

One of the original callers, Zelda Sun, says the fire was 20 by 40 feet wide. She says she notified B.C. Hydro over a year ago about the willow tree near her front yard that was beginning to lean.

“I called them and they marked it for cut, they used this little blue spray paint,” said Sun.

“About six months after that they actually sent a tree crew out because there was a bunch of stuff leaning and they cut out a bunch of the small stuff but they left that one because they didn’t have the proper equipment and they said another crew would come by.”
