A 16.2-hectare (40-acre) chunk of land that was recently added to Cox Community Park has officially opened to the public.

The Regional District of Nanaimo received the property through park dedication that was part of the Mallet Creek subdivision development in October 2021.

The expanded section of Cox Community Park includes new trail signage, trail mapping and approximately 1.5 km of trails connecting to Lockinvar Lane and the Gabriola Medical Clinic.

“This addition to one of Gabriola Island’s most popular parks will be well used by residents,” Vanessa Craig, Electoral Area B Director and chair of the EA B Parks and Open Space Advisory Committee, said in a press release. “Thank you to the Gabriola Lands & Trails Trust volunteers who assisted with constructing the new trails in Cox Community Park.”

This fall, Gabriola Island residents will be asked to provide input towards emerging needs and a long-term management strategy that will help guide future developments in Cox Community Park, according to the RDN.
