A team from Esquimalt High School has a chance to go to the FIRST Robotics World Championship and are asking for help to make the event.

A GoFundMe page has been created to try and raise $26,000 for the “Atom Smashers” team of 13 students to attend the competition in Houston, Texas, beginning April 18.

The Atom Smashers took part in the Canadian Pacific Regional Championship last week at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, facing competitors from as far away as Mexico.

The Esquimalt team won the Rookie All-Star Award at the event and earned an invite to Houston for one of the most prestigious high school international robotics competitions.

The school is looking to raise $2,200 per student, which will cover entry fees, travel, insurance, meals, accommodation and a tour of the NASA Space Centre.

Esquimalt High has a corporate sponsorship package available.

Last year, a robotics team from Victoria was one of two from Canada to qualify for the world championship event.
