The annual Esquimalt Ribfest has been cancelled for 2020 due to COVID-19.

The annual Esquimalt Ribfest that was scheduled for September has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

The charity event, which features barbecue and live music, was supposed to take place from Sept. 11 to 13.

Tom Woods, the Esquimalt Ribfest chair, said organizers were hoping for a “pandemic shift” but it is now clear that the event cannot go ahead.

“In seven short years we have raised over $500,000 for local charities and are proud of the fact that 100 per cent of funds raised go back into the community to people and organizations that need them the most,” Woods said in a media release.

“COVID-19 has made the financial situation for many of these charities even more unpredictable and for this reason, we hope to raise some funds virtually to continue helping them out.”

Donations are being accepted with the Esquimalt Firefighters Charitable Foundation. To donate, go to http://esquimaltfirefighters.ca/donate/.

Woods said the Esquimalt Ribfest will be back in 2021 on Sept. 10, 11, and 12 for the “best year ever.”
