Three Canadian navy vessels have had serious technical issues at sea in the last two weeks, including one based in Esquimalt.

A National Defence release says HMCS Edmonton, a Kingston-class coastal defence vessel, was conducting routine operations in the eastern Pacific Ocean Monday when it had a short loss of electrical power.

The crew responded and brought power back less than a minute later, but electronic control of the propulsion system did not come back on line.

It was found there were two blown fuses that caused the propulsion failure.

The government says the crew is safe and no one was injured, and the ship is expected to return to its mission soon.

HMCS Edmonton is at sea on Operation CARIBBE, a U.S. led international effort aimed to stop drug trafficking.

Defence officials said there were fires on board HMCS Halifax Oct. 26 and HMCS Toronto Oct. 29, both in the starboard gas turbine enclosure in the forward engine room.

Both vessels were able to return to their missions in Europe and no was injured.

Investigations will be done on both vessels.

The defence department says the issue with HMCS Edmonton is not related to the other vessels since they are Halifax-class frigates and had different types of equipment on board.
