Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for incoming rainfall on eastern Vancouver Island from Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.

The weather agency says widespread accumulations of between 30 to 50 millimetres is likely on the east coast, with the heaviest rain occurring in the Lower Mainland.

The rain will persist Friday morning through Friday evening, and strong winds are also possible Friday afternoon and evening.

Environment Canada says the rain is a result of a “robust frontal system” that will start overnight Thursday and intensify during the day Friday.

Rainfall should ease Friday night.

Residents are recommended to clear leaves and debris from drainage areas as heavy rain could case localized flooding.

Special weather statements are also in effect for Metro Vancouver, Howe Sound, the Fraser Valley and the Sunshine Coast.
