A home that was engulfed in flames in Crofton Saturday evening was extinguished with the help of four fire departments.

The Crofton Volunteer Fire Department was the first to arrive on the scene on Escarpment Way just after 5:30 p.m.

Shortly after Chemainus fire, Maple Bay fire and Duncan fire crews arrived to help battle the blaze.

A neighbour was the one to call in the fire, crews fully contained the flames in around five hours and were able to save some of the homeowner’s belongings.

“We do have agreements that we will all help each other,” said Natasha Horsman, communications manager at the Municipality of North Cowichan.

“We are really thankful for all the work they [Cowichan Fire Department crews] do, they do get paid but not a lot for actual call out times… these are people who have other jobs,”

The investigation into what caused the blaze will begin tomorrow, the building is a total loss.

The owner was not at home at the time of the fire.
