End to long weekend bring long ferry waits, sold out flights

WATCH: Travelers getting on or off on the Island face heavy traffic as the holiday weekend comes to an end. The traffic tie ups only expected to get worse by Monday evening. Isabelle Raghem reports.

By noon Monday, BC Ferries’ Swartz Bay Terminal was packed and reservations sold out.

The long weekend makes for one of the busiest times for B.C. Ferries.  This weekend’s Sun Fest, an event that attracted more than 40,000 people, also added to this BC Day Monday bumper to bumper traffic.

Most passengers had one sailing wait by this afternoon, many having to wait at least two hours before getting on a ferry.

Harbour Air also dealt with heavy traffic Monday: Only a handful of seats remain available for Monday night, while evening flights leaving Victoria Tuesday were booked solid by Monday afternoon.

Some travellers who had booked a flight to Whistler with Harbour Air had quite the shock Monday when the flight was cancelled due to smoky skies caused by fires in the Interior.

And the mayhem is far from over. B.C. Ferries expect waits to be just as long Tuesday.
