Emergency alert test coming to cellphones, TV and radio

As part of Emergency Preparedness Week, an emergency alert test will be issued to all cellphones, televisions and radios in B.C. at 10:55 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

In a press release from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, The test alert will go to all compatible cellphones, and will interrupt radio and television broadcasts. The ministry wants to conduct test the in order to assess the system’s readiness for an actual emergency.

According to the release, in 2022, the province expanded the use of BC Emergency Alerts beyond tsunami warnings to include imminent threats from floods, wildfires and extreme heat emergencies.

Alerts will be broadcast automatically at no cost to the user and all information regarding the upcoming test can be read here.
