Elderly man and grandson robbed in Nanaimo's Bowen Park

RCMP say an elderly man and his grandson were assaulted and robbed while they were walking through Bowen Park in Nanaimo two weeks ago.

Police said the robbery happened between 5:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 near a wooded area north of the picnic tables and walking bridges, and adjacent to the Millstone Stream. According to police, a 71-year-old man told police he and his 20-year-old grandson were casually walking through the park when he went off the trail to urinate behind a bush.

The elderly man then noticed a man walking toward him. Police said the man punched the grandfather and then his grandson in the face without any warning. The 71-year-old was knocked to the ground, and his eyeglasses and baseball hat fell off.

Police said the suspect demanded their wallets but after seeing the cap and glasses on the ground picked those up and walked away. The baseball cap is brown and has the words “San Diego Zoo” on the brim and SDZ printed on the side. The eyeglasses are Gucci and brown in colour.

The 71-year-old received several stitches to close the cut on his lower lip. The grandson did not need medical care. The suspect is described by police as white with blond hair. Police said he wore a brown jacket and brown pants. He was
