Dynamic Beast crane returns to remove old Johnson Street bridge

WATCH: If you’re trying to get pictures of the original Johnson Street Bridge, now is your last chance. Old Blue is coming down.

Expect traffic delays this week as crews work to decommission and remove the old Johnson Street bridge, with the massive dynamic beast crane back in Victoria.

The new bridge, that opened March 31, will see a full closure to vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian traffic Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The massive crane will lift the main span of the old bridge to disconnect it from the counterweight tower.

On Wednesday, the main and west spans of the bridge will be fully removed and placed on the deck of the crane barge before departing from the job site.

There will be a full closure from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and the city says if the barge has not left by that time, an additional closure after 6 p.m. would be required.

The schedule is subject to change and is weather dependant as the steel pieces cannot be lifted during high winds.

The city says work could extend to Thursday if more time is needed to remove the old bridge.
