Dying Duncan man begins last road trip to enjoy Vancouver Island

WatchA terminally ill Duncan man is travelling Vancouver Island to fulfill his end of life wish. We first told you about Vince Watson two weeks ago, when Galaxy Motors donated a station wagon to help him get on the road. As Skye Ryan reports, he's now started that road trip.

With only weeks to live, Vince Watson is still grateful for where he lays, bumping along in a donated station wagon to see the beauty of Vancouver Island one last time.

“When I see a pullout by the water, I pull over just to have a look,” said Vince, a Duncan resident.

“And this world is absolutely beautiful. I’m not gonna live forever. I know that but I’m happy.”

Watson is getting to live out his end-of-life wish thanks to the woman who is driving him, no matter what obstacle they may face.

“I’m trying to be Vince’s rock,” said Tina Watson, Vince’s wife.

“I’m trying to stay strong.”

“My wife has been an angel she’s taken me everywhere, done everything for me,” said Vince Watson.

Tina is at the wheel of a blue station wagon that was donated to Vince two weeks ago.

“I don’t think anybody’s every done anything this nice for me it’s kind of unbelievable,” Vince Watson told CHEK News when the keys were handed over by Galaxy Motors on Sept. 20.

After seeing Vince’s story,  offers of accommodations on the road trip have also come in.

A man in Powell River, Vinca and Tina’s first big stop, filled up their fuel tank and a GoFundMe page is helping keep the trip going too.

“Oh it’s unbelievable. I didn’t think there were people left in the world like that but there is,” said Vince.

Vince has so lost so much weight now and is so weak he spends much of the drives lying flat on a mattress.

In his weakened state, he fell and broke his ankle in Powell River Monday so the Watson road trip that had planned to continue on to Tahsis, Campbell River and Tofino has had to take this detour for surgery at Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan.

“So here I am starting over,” said Vince.

“But it will pass and I’ll be on my way again.”

“The sooner the better,” Tina said.
